2024-2025 Athletics Recap Letter

Lakers,

As I reflect on the past year in La Lumiere Athletics, I'm reminded of what makes our community truly special. Being a Laker is about more than just wins and losses—it's about our character, our effort, and who we are when no one is watching. This was best captured when I received a late night phone call from another Athletic Director, complimenting me on Christian Lake and Brady Monaghan, who quietly stayed behind to clean the bench after a tough road loss—not because they were asked to, but because it was the right thing to do. That is what it means to be a Laker as so many of our Lakers have demonstrated this year.

When asked what it meant to play sports at La Lumiere, Senior Avery Tegt said - "Looking back, my La Lu athletic experience was so valuable to me because of both the competitive spirit of the teams, along with the community created on the team. Being a captain on the girls soccer team taught me how to lead by example with my peers on and off the field."

Our competitive spirit has been incredible to witness this year. While many know our National Basketball team for representing La Lumiere on the national stage, we've seen tremendous growth and achievement across all of our athletic programs:

  • Boys Soccer made history, completing the first undefeated season in the modern era—a testament to their unity, drive, and heart. The program also produced three national award winners: David Wonink, Luca Asanaka, and Ezra Spira.

  • Girls Soccer finished their season strong, each winning three of their last four contests with grit and teamwork capped off by a lake jump after a commanding 9-0 senior night victory over SB Washington.

  • Volleyball also ended their season winning 3 of their last 4, and came back to win 3-2 over KTA in the SSAC Tournament Semi-final.

  • Girls Golf and both Cross Country teams set multiple personal records across their respective courses—highlighted by freshman Zen Wendt's first-place finish at a meet.

  • Boys Tennis and Baseball, under Coach Logsdon's leadership, both showed noticeable improvement. Baseball recorded a spectacular 5-1 win over rival Marquette Catholic at the RailCats SteelYard, led by a dominant pitching performance from junior Josh Jaracz.

  • Our National Basketball Team was one of just two programs in the country to feature multiple McDonald's All-Americans: Darius Adams and Jalen Haralson.

  • Girls Basketball, under first-year coach Coach Fleming, took a major step forward, led by senior guard Lauren Walsh, who led the state in scoring and reached 1,000 points for her career on senior night.

  • Regional Basketball won their 2nd consecutive SSAC Championship, led by Senior guard and 1,000 point scorer Luca Asanaka.

  • Boys Golf just completed a historic season, highlighted by a 2nd place finish at the 89th Annual Ueble Invitational. Another highlight was the Lakers had their first-ever team win at Culver Academy, as well as sophomore Jack Vanderveen's individual title at the 2025 South Bend Adams Invitational at Morris Park. There is great momentum within our boys golf program.

  • Girls Tennis like Boys Golf is having a stellar season, with a 7-1 record led by a group of 6 seniors, who consistently lead with great competitive spirit.

  • And a special thank you to our Cheer Team, who brought energy, spirit, and joy to all games throughout the winter season.

  • And how can we forget the infamous half court shot from Jack Barry to cap off Marsch Madness!

While this doesn't capture every story or milestone, I want to extend heartfelt gratitude to all of our athletes, coaches, families, and supporters. The future of La Lumiere Athletics is bright—because our student-athletes lead with integrity, resilience, and heart.

Go Lakers!
