"If we win, we swim"- a mentality that endorsed La Lu girls soccer on Saturday
La Porte, IN - Following a four game losing streak, the La Lumiere Lakers Girls Soccer team was desperate for their first season win. After the loss of their first home game, suddenly the mindset changed from "we need to win" to "we have to win." When the team found out they would be playing the Hammond Morton Governors on parents weekend, they were instantly hopeful for their first win, but stayed humble because they didn't know quite what team they would be playing against. Since this new season has started, they knew it would be a rebuilding season, but the quick improvement and immense teamwork has been of vital importance.
When a motive was needed, none other than Hope Usanase '24 came up with the best motive yet; "if we win, we swim" a tradition the prior football team had. The energy of the entire game was electric. With an early goal by Lucy Horn '27 followed by another from Nicole Herrera '25 and yet another by Horn all before halftime, the team's spirits were high. "Going into halftime, I looked at Avery and said, 'looks like we'll be swimming today,'" said Horn, and she was absolutely right!
At halftime, the main motive of the game was to not let any balls past the defense, which Anne Kuehn '25 and Jolie Fontaine '24 had a huge part in. They both had stellar performances all game. With two more goals early in the second half: another from both Horn and Herrera, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to sub Usanase into goal. Shortly after, Avery Tegt '25 scored to make the score 6-0. With the help from the motto "if we win, we swim," the Laker defeat over the Hammond Morton Governors was well-earned.
